5/16/2023 0 Comments Life balance programs![]() ![]() In it, we outline what Tracy calls “work-life supports.” Tracy believes work-life supports are one of the first steps in creating integration between work and life. Tracy Brower to write an e-book all about it. Work-life integration is so crucial to your employees’ well-being that we partnered with Dr. How human resources can strengthen employee work-life balance And as a result, your employees will be less stressed, happier and more efficient with their time at work. When employees have control over a flexible schedule and feel there’s enough time to finish their projects at work, go on a run and take their kids to soccer, it benefits you, too. Employees bring their best selves to work when they’re provided with the necessary support resources. The demand for work-life integration is here, and it’s only growing. I n fact, a recent survey found 95% of workers want to set their own hours. A recent survey reported that “nearly 70% of professionals who transitioned to remote work because of the pandemic say they now work on the weekends, and 45% say they regularly work more hours during the week than they did before.” The nature of work has changed drastically over the past few years - with hybrid or remote work options, employees are putting flexibility at the top of their list of work requirements. Remote workers are spending more time at work. Tracy Brower Employee engagement and work-life balance ![]() Life should be part of work, in that we should be able to bring our whole selves to work - or more of ourselves, at least” – Dr. Regardless of what you call it, both terms explain it’s impossible to separate work from life and life from work. “Work-life integration” expresses the importance of blending the demands of work and life into a unified both. Tracy says work-life balance isn’t actually about balancing.Lucy illustrates “work-life balance” as balancing a towering stack of plates, which represent bills to pay, carpools to run and projects to finish at work while trying to keep it all from crashing. We draw our definitions of what this term really is from two work experts, Dr. It gives the impression that spending 50% of your time doing “work” and 50% doing “life” (or various percentages adding up to 100) equates to high-well-being and a successful you. “Work-life balance” is a commonly used yet misleading phrase. You hear the phrase all the time, but do you really know what employee work-life balance is? To bring you up to speed, we’ve got everything you need to know - including how you can best support your employees. ![]() 5/16/2023 0 Comments Turn off tv with apple remote![]() ![]() Still, not only is my living-room setup simpler than it was-there are fewer remotes, and they’re easier to use!-but I got a more modern, full-featured receiver with Dolby Atmos support out of it.Īnd all because of the Power button on the Apple TV remote. Yes, I would greatly prefer to simplify further-if I can train the TiVo remote to fire off the right infrared signal to the receiver, it might be able to kick off the whole thing without needing that third remote. With all that done, I’ve reduced my remotes on the coffee table to three: the simple smart remote, the TiVo remote, and the Apple TV remote. I had two buttons left, so I set them to control our living-room lights at two different levels of brightness generally associated with TV viewing-dim and off. (The receiver, when it powers on, uses CEC to turn on the TV itself.) The bottom button I set to turn everything off. I reprogrammed the top button on the remote to turn the receiver on and set it to the input being used by the TiVo. ![]() Here’s my solution, at least for now: I replaced the Logitech remote with a HomeKit-compatible Remote I had laying around. I’m not ready to give up on the TiVo, and Logitech has given up on the Harmony, so I decided to see if I could find an alternative way to control the TiVo using HomeKit. This is great, except we still use the TiVo for a few things, mostly Jeopardy! and live sports. With a new receiver, I was able to use the Apple TV remote to turn my TV, receiver, and Apple TV on and off, adjust the volume, the works. It started with a new receiver, one that supports HDMI-CEC, AirPlay, (and-via a Homebridge plug-in-HomeKit). So, inspired by the Apple TV Remote, I ripped up my entire living-room setup and tried to build something better. Plus, occasionally we need to use the remote that came with our TV. We’ve got a TiVo remote, an Apple TV remote, a Logitech Harmony remote, and even a Lutron Caseta remote for our living-room lights. I’ve also been frustrated by the number of remotes we have to keep around. Which is great, except that I have a complicated setup that includes a home-theater receiver and a TiVo, neither of which can be controlled via HDMI-CEC 1, the protocol that Apple TV uses to control other devices. While the Apple TV has been able to control external devices for a while now, the Power button is so much more explicit: You should be able to use this button to turn your TV on and off. Also, assuming youre sending the audio from AppleTV to the TV via HDMI, IR blaster. So, if your TV supports CEC, turning the TV on/off will/should turn the appletv on/off (kind of depends on how the TV manufacturer implemented CEC). It was a single button on that remote that started it all: the new Power button. actually let me couch that by saying that whats happening is that the IR blaster is controlling the TV itself. (I thought a new model might have been imminent-oops.) And along with that new Apple TV box came a new remote, which has earned a lot of praise for not being the old Apple TV Siri Remote. We were happy earlier this month to take delivery of a new Apple TV 4K, to replace one that I had given to my daughter when she returned to college last fall. This is the story of how the new Apple TV remote cost me hundreds of dollars, but in a good way. And all for the want of an Apple TV remote ![]() 5/16/2023 0 Comments Splatter paint canvas ideas![]() ![]() This process creates large drops or splatters of paint as opposed to the finer mist from the above techniques. Use the toothbrush or spray bottle to color around the object while going through the screen to create a fine spray pattern. Set a piece of window screen or cheesecloth over the object. Set the nozzle to a fine mist and spray the area around the object. Put food coloring and water or a liquid watercolor in a spray bottle. Reposition the toothbrush to splatter paint around the entire shape. Keep the toothbrush close to the paper so the paint doesn’t splatter where it shouldn’t go. This will cause the paint to flick off the toothbrush. Run the handle of a paintbrush or a stick over the bristles of the toothbrush. Hold the toothbrush over the object or shape. Toothbrush Splatter Paintingĭip an old toothbrush in tempera or acrylic paint. Set the object or cut-out shape on a piece of paper and then use one of the following techniques to color the space around the object. Cookie cutters offer clear shapes to trace and cut out. Make a stencil by cutting a shape from paper, lightweight cardboard, or fun foam. Only select objects that can get covered with paint. To find an object that will make a clear print, look at the silhouette or outline of the object as opposed to specific details on the object. The print shows the negative space, or the space around the object. Splatter Painting With a StencilĬreate a splatter print of an object with an interesting shape – this technique is great with leaves. Of course, kids can always do these projects outdoors so they are freer to make a mess. There’s no need to fling the paint off a brush with vigorous arm motions. Whichever splatter technique is being used, keep the brush near the paper. Cover the work area with newspaper or a vinyl tablecloth. Splatter painting can be messy – but it doesn’t have to be! Children who know to be careful shouldn’t have a problem. Kids can try using whatever paints they have available, although some techniques work better with certain paints. Below are some different techniques to create various results – from large droplets to a fine mist of paint. Splattering diffuses or scatters paint over the paper or fabric being painted. This will create a fine stray of color, you can also flick a bit harder to get more globs of paint.Splatter painting creates an entirely different effect than brushstrokes. This is extra fun since kids can pick out their favorite colors to splatter with.Īll you have to do is dip your toothbrushes lightly into the paint and flick the bristles with your finger. I like to get several paintbrushes and several paint colors. Now for the fun part! I like to use toothbrushes to create paint splatters since you can control them and get much more splatters than you can from paintbrushes. Very small children may not be able to paint carefully enough to keep the outline intact. If you are doing this for a kids painting party, it might be easier to paint the background ahead of time. Just paint all of the exposed areas of your canvas to give it a nice black background to use for your splatters. That is because it will create clean lines and will show the paint splatters really nicely. The best color of paint to use for the background is black. I also have all kinds of free stencils that you can download!Īdd tape to the back of your outline and stick it to your concave so that it stays secure as you paint. ![]() You can find all kinds of great shapes online to print, or you can draw your own to cut out. For this painting, I used a pumpkin shape. I do this on cardstock since it is sturdier, and I will usually cut out the shape that I want. The first thing you need to do to start your splatter paint painting is to create a stencil or outline. Yes, it may be a little messy, but that is part of the fun! 1. This is also PERFECT for a toddler paint party! Or, just set aside an afternoon to teach your kids and a few friends. Above the lurch of water and against the sunset-striated skies, the feeling is as hokey as it is sort of stirring. As Huck and Jim run from society, they play games, smoke pipes, stoke fires, chew the fat, even mock-fight each other with imaginary swords. Through all the adventures (or misadventures), the most stirring moments - in visual terms - come on that mighty river. When Huck asks what the furry thing is, Jim replies, "Hairball from a ox - puked it up just the other day."Īs the unscrupulous rogues who give the two friends their worst trouble, Jason Robards and Robbie Coltrane come on with amusingly broad abandon as, respectively, "The King" and "The Duke." When they introduce themselves - in a rare burst of honesty - as robbers and scam artists, Huck declares, "Hell's bells, I wish I knew a good trade." Pretending to read Huck's future, pseudo-mystic Jim pulls a giant hairy ball from nowhere - his answer to entrail reading. "Just 'cause you're taught something's right," he says, "and everybody believes it's right, it don't mean it's right."Ībove all, there's a straightforward sense of boyish adventure - and laughs. ![]() There is no shortage of dignity for this Jim, and he informs Huck about the wrongness of slavery with appropriate regularity. The movie is dependable Disney fare, with twinkly-eyed good characters and cartoonish villains, but it marks Twain: the writer's supple sense of humor Huck's irrepressible, tall-tale-spinning personality Jim's simple and dignified presence and most powerfully, the growing bond between the two. In addition, Huck's friendship for Jim clashes with his ingrained belief that he'll go to hell for helping an escaped slave. But the journey is banked with trail-sniffing dogs, sleazy wayfarers and bounty hunters. On a makeshift raft, they head down the Mississippi for the Ohio River, where Jim can set course for the free states. But their initial joy rapidly fades when they see Jim's face on wanted posters - for Huck's murder. He is soon joined by slave-friend Jim, who has made his own run for it in the post-mortem confusion. Vance as Jim, as they sail the Mississippi toward freedom.Īfraid that brutal, drunken father Pap (Ron Perlman) will kill him, Huck fakes a bloody death, then hides out by the river. Until that unlikely time, it's no hardship to watch Elijah Wood (the kid in just about every movie these days) as Huck, and Courtney B. Perhaps Robert De Niro (in his ultimate screen role) will play Jim in Martin Scorsese's "Runawayfellas." Or Francis Coppola will unleash "The Heart of Huckleberry," in which government forces send Huck downriver to terminate Jim with extreme prejudice. Maybe one day, a directorial powerhouse will create the Amazing Cinematic Version of the Book. ![]() Even in Walt Disney's no-frills production, "The Adventures of Huck Finn," that sturdy appeal is apparent. ![]() So sound, in fact, that it can carry any adaptation that hops aboard. It remains a sturdy raft, constructed of sound American storytelling. What, for instance, should a black child make of a book that depicts slavery as a normal value? Yet this 19th-century river-bound yarn still slices through the tricky revisionism. IN RECENT years, Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" has weathered its share of political scrutiny. ![]() |
